Selecting Optics for Long-Range Shooting

Your rifle and load can only perform as well as your optic allows you to aim. At long range, a scope is not just a magnification tool — it's your primary interface with the target, your dial-up correction system, and one of the most consequential investments you'll make as a precision shooter. Choosing the right optic is worth taking seriously.

Magnification: How Much Do You Need?

More magnification is not always better. Higher magnification narrows your field of view, amplifies mirage, and makes target acquisition slower. For ELR shooting at 1,000–2,000+ yards, a variable power scope in the 5-25x or 7-35x range gives you the flexibility to observe at distance while still being usable at closer ranges. Key rule: match magnification to the targets and distances you actually shoot, not the maximum you think you might shoot someday.

Objective Lens Size

Larger objective lenses (50mm, 56mm) gather more light, which matters in low-light conditions — dawn and dusk hunting scenarios or dimly lit target ranges. For pure precision shooting in good light, a 44–50mm objective is typically sufficient. Larger objectives add weight and require higher rings that may affect cheek weld.

First Focal Plane vs. Second Focal Plane

This is one of the most important decisions for long-range shooters:

  • First Focal Plane (FFP): The reticle scales with magnification. Holdovers and ranging are accurate at any power setting. Preferred by most precision and ELR shooters because you can use your reticle for wind holds and ranging at any magnification without mental math.
  • Second Focal Plane (SFP): The reticle stays the same size regardless of magnification. Reticle values are only accurate at the magnification they're designed for (usually max power). Fine for shooters who always dial adjustments and rarely use reticle holds, and often offers a cleaner sight picture at lower power.

For ELR and field shooting where conditions change rapidly, FFP is generally the stronger choice.

Turret System: Zero Stop and Exposed Turrets

At long range, you're going to dial elevation corrections constantly. You need turrets that are:

  • Exposed and tactile — you should be able to feel each click without looking
  • Accurate and repeatable — 1/4 MOA or 0.1 MRAD per click with no mechanical slop
  • Zero-stop capable — so you can quickly return to your base zero without counting down clicks
  • High elevation travel — ELR shooting may require 30–60+ MOA of elevation range; know your scope's total travel before buying

MOA vs. MRAD

MOA (minute of angle) and MRAD (milliradian) are both angular measurement systems for adjustments and ranging. Neither is objectively superior — what matters is that your scope, reticle, and ballistic solver all use the same system. MRAD is increasingly the standard among precision and ELR shooters, particularly those using metric systems or working with military-style ranging. Either works; consistency matters more than the choice.

Glass Quality and Light Transmission

Optical clarity directly affects your ability to read wind, identify targets, and spot your own impacts. High-end glass with quality multi-coated lenses provides better edge-to-edge clarity, superior light transmission, and better performance in difficult conditions. When evaluating scopes, look at real-world edge clarity and low-light performance — not just magnification specs.

Parallax Adjustment

Parallax is the apparent movement of the reticle against the target when your eye is not perfectly centered. For long-range shooting, a properly adjusted parallax is critical for accurate aiming. Look for scopes with side-focus parallax adjustment (AO) with positive detents or at minimum a smooth continuous adjustment. Set parallax to your actual target distance before each shot sequence.

Reticle Choice

Your reticle should give you usable wind hold references without cluttering your sight picture. Popular ELR reticles include Christmas tree-style layouts with hash marks for wind holds at multiple ranges. Avoid reticles so complex they become distracting under field conditions.

Mounting Matters

A world-class scope in poor rings is a liability. Use quality one-piece mounts with proper torque specs, lapped if necessary, and with enough forward offset to get proper eye relief with your stock position. Check for scope cant during installation.

Bottom Line

The right long-range optic balances magnification range, reticle design, turret performance, and glass quality for your specific shooting application. It's one of the few pieces of equipment where buying once and buying quality pays real dividends.
